Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we start the school year off year at South Fremont High School, we would like to try to help you by reducing some stress and confusion for everyone.

First, let’s talk about CANVAS and PowerSchool and what they are used for and how you can use them to help you track your student.

CANVAS is used by the school to give assignments, comments, and grading during the semester.  CANVAS is where you should go to check for the most current grade.  Checking both CANVAS and PowerSchool for current grades will only cause confusion and frustration, because PowerSchool is only used for attendance and storing transcripts.  While CANVAS and PowerSchool do communicate, they will seldom match 100%.

PowerSchool is used by the school to track attendance, store transcripts, and create schedules.  We take attendance every day and if your student is absent and you have not notified the school, you receive a phone call.  We store transcripts twice per year, about one week after the end of each semester.  It is at this time that the teachers review the grades in PowerSchool and confirm that they are correct before they are stored.  If you find a discrepancy on the report card, there is a process that we must follow to make those changes.

Chromebooks are provided by the school district and that is the device that your student should be using at school to complete any schoolwork that is online.  They should bring it to school, charged every day and ready to use.  We do not typically use cell phones for this purpose.  Cell phones are a huge distraction and should remain in their pocket or follow the teacher’s expectations for cell phones in their classroom.

Earbuds / earphones are fine to have at school but should be used after the teacher has finished presenting the lesson / giving instructions.  We do understand that they can help block out distractions, and we support that use.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Respectfully,

South Fremont High School
